History, culture, living heritage

This private two-hour Jewish Budapest walking tour explores one of the most fascinating parts of Pest — a neighbourhood where grand synagogues, hidden courtyards and ordinary streets preserve centuries of Jewish history. Budapest’s historic Jewish Quarter is one of those parts of the city where almost every street has a story to tell. Some are inspiring, some are heartbreaking, and many reveal a side of Budapest that is easy to walk past without ever really noticing.

Along the way, we pass the beautifully restored Rumbach Street Synagogue and the Kazinczy Street Synagogue, home to Budapest’s Orthodox Jewish community. But the tour is about much more than synagogue architecture. We talk about traditions and holidays, food and family life, and the people who shaped this neighbourhood over generations. There are stories from the golden age of Jewish Budapest, when the community played an extraordinary role in the cultural, intellectual and economic life of the city. Inevitably, there are also stories from its darkest years: of persecution and loss, but also of courage, survival and people who risked everything to save others.

Rather than trying to squeeze several centuries of history into a breathless checklist, this tour is designed as an introduction. There is time to look around, ask questions and understand how the different pieces fit together. The conversation can naturally follow your interests. If you have family connections to Hungary, a particular interest in Jewish history or simply want to understand more about the neighbourhood you are walking through, tell us. We can shape the experience accordingly.

The walk can finish at the Dohány Street Synagogue, the largest operating synagogue in Europe. From here, you can continue with an interior visit and guided tour of the synagogue complex at your own pace.

This tour is recommended for:
