How to get from Budapest to the Hungaroring using public transportation

Whether you’re heading to the Formula 1 Grand Prix or any motorsport events accommodated by Hungaroring, getting to the Hungaroring from Budapest by public transportation is relatively easy and affordable if you are an experienced user of public transportation networks.

We understand that power cars and horsepower is the centerpiece of the grand prix weekend, we still recommend to utilise public transit to and from Hungaroring and Budapest.

The Hungaroring is located in Mogyoród, about 20 kilometers northeast of Budapest, and while it’s in a more rural area, MÁV Group (Hungarian Railways) offers several public transport options to get you there relatively smoothly.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you navigate your way from Budapest to the Hungaroring using public transit.

From Budapest to Hungaroring

During the grand prix event suburban train line H8 will operate with increased capacity between Örs Vezér tere terminal and Kerepes station. This means there is a train in every 10-15 minutes. Please keep in mind that the trains are several decades old, there is no A/C on board. When crowded, passenger comfort is quite limited.

Take M2 subway line from the city centre to Örs Vezér tere terminal. H8 from Örs Vezér tere to Kerepes station, change to shuttle bus at Kerepes station to get to Gate nr. 3.

Alternative option is taking H8 from Örs Vezér tere to Szilasliget station. From there you can walk to the gates in about 30 minutes.

From Hungaroring to Budapest

For your return journey use a different route in order to avoid crowds. Take the shuttle buses from Hungaroring to Gödöllő and change there to national railways. If everything works as planned, double-decker trains with A/C depart in every 15 minutes taking you from Gödöllő station to Budapest-Keleti. Pest County Pass is valid on trains between Gödöllő and Budapest-Keleti.

What type of pass, ticket do you need to and from Hungaroring?

First thing first, buy your ticket in advance, through the respective apps. BudapestGo for the Budapest public transit lines and MÁV+ for the suburban train and shuttle bus. You can also buy your Pest County Pass on the Hungarian Railway company’s website. This can not just save you lots of time but also can limit the conflict with conductors.

Pest County 24-hour Pass/Forma 1 Travel pass allows unlimited travel by train, suburban train and shuttle bus within its validity period.

Please note that Pest County 24-hour Pass is not valid on BKK services. For that you’ll need an extra 24 hour day pass purchased through BudapestGo.

Practical tips

First of all, if you managed to buy a ticket for the grand prix, you can navigate public transportation as well. So, no excuses.

  • 65+ years old travel for free of charge. Carry a photo ID with you at all times. If you dont have any on you, it’s your fault, you are than 25 years old, and will you’ll pay a fine.
  • Kids under the age of 6 travel for free of charge. Same rule applies as above. Have a photo ID on you at all times.
  • If you travel with single tickets, make sure to validate those. It says on the ticket as well. You’ll need at least 3 single tickets for a journey between Budapest and the circuit. 1 for the subway. 1 for the suburban train, valid till the city limits and 1 supplement ticket valid between the city limits and Kerepes station. All 3 has to be validated separately. Sounds too complicated? Buy your pass in advance.
  • Make sure to buy your single tickets in advance. The queue for buying a ticket for H8 suburban train at Örs Vezér tere tends to be long. Don’t waste your precious time, buy tickets in advance, or travel with day passes.
Here you can find information about how to validate your ticket:

  • If you buy a pass online, make sure to keep your smartphone alive at all times. If you can’t show your pass on your phone, it’s your fault, you’ll have to pay a fine.
  • There will be conductors checking tickets at every step of your way. It is not their job to educate you about the T&C they are there to enforce it. It is not a scam, if they make you pay a fine when you have no valid pass, or a validated ticket on you.

Summary of all the information above

Use public transportation between the circuit and Budapest. Buy 2 passes for each day, one for Budapest, the second one for Pest county/Formula 1 Travel Pass.
